[caption id="attachment_135" align="alignright" width="208" caption="Captain Jack Sparrow (with comparison image)"]Captain Jack Sparrow[/caption] My sweetheart LOVES Halloween ... truly loves it. To the point where he considers it his favorite holiday (personally, Christmas trumps Halloween in my book, but I do see the appeal of Halloween). So he goes all out every year ... he starts deciding what he will be MONTHS in advance. And he always picks characters he can relate to in some way ... in the past, he has been such notable characters as Batman, Anakin Skywalker, and Captain Jack Sparrow. So it was no surprise to me when this year he picked Tony Stark aka Iron Man (the Mark VI version). At end of August, he sent me a link via text to a "deluxe" Iron Man costume he had just ordered online ... a $200 costume I might add. Of course, after I looked at the picture, I realized while this looked like a decent costume, he would inevitably augment/customize it when he got it. But compared to the one he saw for several *thousand*, I thought this was a moderate expenditure. Then the costume arrived ... on his birthday none-the-less. We were supposed to be getting ready to head out of town to visit his family for his birthday, but of course, he NEEDED to open it and try it on immediately ... he was like a kid at Christmas, he was so excited to get his "deluxe" Iron Man costume ... Then the disappointment came ... the costume was, in a word, pathetic. I will let the pictures tell the story ... [slideshow]
* Note: A lot of what you see in the picture is a screen-printed body suit - there are very few "armor" pieces and the ones that are there are about 1/16" think cheap plastic held on by velcro and clear plastic bands.
As you can imagine, this was NOT acceptable and the decision was made instantly that it was going back ... but now, what to do about a costume? Well, since he obviously felt he could no longer trust the options available online, my sweetheart decided if he wanted the job done right, he would have to do it himself ... Stay turned for what happened next ...
